Bantam / 14U Hockey

Advancing skill, awareness, responsibility, and competition.

PYH's Bantam / 14U program challenges players to develop their abilities while competing in a faster, more demanding team environment. The focus remains on skill development, hockey intelligence, responsible competition, and teamwork.

About the Program

Developing Players for the Next Stage of Hockey

At the Bantam / 14U level, players continue refining skating, puck skills, decision-making, and positional awareness while adjusting to a faster and more competitive game.

Practices combine individual development with increasingly advanced tactical concepts and game situations. Players are challenged to execute skills under pressure, recognize opportunities, and contribute to team play.

Players also take greater responsibility for preparation, communication, effort, sportsmanship, and their individual improvement.

Age Eligibility: Bantam / 14U is intended for players within the applicable 14U age classification. Birth-year eligibility is determined by current-season hockey association guidelines. Families with placement questions should contact PYH.

Our Development Philosophy

USA Hockey's American Development Model

USA Hockey's American Development Model (ADM) identifies 14U as an important stage in long-term athletic development, often described as "Training to Train." Players combine stronger individual skills with tactical learning, athletic conditioning, and greater personal responsibility.

Building the Athletic Foundation

Players continue developing speed, agility, coordination, balance, and age-appropriate strength while improving their hockey skills.

Advanced Game Understanding

Players expand their understanding of team tactics, positional responsibilities, transitions, and decision-making through realistic game situations.

Taking Ownership of Development

Players begin taking a more active role in preparation, purposeful practice, personal improvement, and communication with their coaches.

Individual Growth & Maturity

Young athletes develop physically and mentally at different rates. Continued encouragement, appropriate challenges, and a positive environment support long-term development.

Physical Play & Player Safety

Competing with Control, Awareness, and Respect

Bantam / 14U is an important transition as the pace and physical demands of hockey increase. Safe technique, awareness, respect, and responsible competition are essential.

Body Checking & Contact Skills

USA Hockey permits legal body checking in designated 14U youth checking classifications. Proper instruction emphasizes angling, positioning, balance, giving and receiving contact, and gaining puck possession.

Safety & Sportsmanship

Players are expected to compete within the rules, respect opponents, avoid dangerous contact, and demonstrate self-control. Safety and sportsmanship remain priorities throughout the season.

Important — Body Checking Rules: Legal body checking is permitted in USA Hockey's designated 14U youth checking category, but individual leagues and competitions may have additional restrictions. Checking from behind, late hits, head contact, and other prohibited actions are not acceptable. Applicable USA Hockey, Massachusetts Hockey, and league rules govern all PYH games.

Player Pathway

Preparing for the Next Stage

As players continue developing and advance into the next age classification, they progress toward Midget / 16U–18U hockey. Continued skill development, sportsmanship, and personal responsibility help prepare them for older youth hockey.

Peewee / 12U Bantam / 14U Midget / 16U–18U

Every Player Develops Differently. Physical maturity, skill progression, confidence, and individual readiness vary from player to player. Development should emphasize long-term growth rather than comparisons based only on size, strength, or short-term results.
