Developing Our Players
Effective youth hockey practices should be age-appropriate, engaging, and focused on helping every player improve.
Emphasize skating, puck control, passing, shooting, and other fundamentals appropriate to the age and experience of the players.
Keep players active, minimize unnecessary waiting in lines, and use stations and small-area games to maximize meaningful repetitions.
Reinforce communication, respect, accountability, and the importance of supporting teammates and demonstrating positive behavior.
Create a welcoming, encouraging environment where players feel comfortable learning, making mistakes, and developing confidence on the ice.
Coaches are encouraged to prepare practice plans in advance, establish clear development goals, and adapt activities to the needs of their players.
USA Hockey's age-appropriate practice planning resources are a recommended starting point, while other coaching tools can provide additional ideas and variety.
Coaching Support
Peabody Youth Hockey encourages our coaches to share ideas, collaborate, and take advantage of the many available development resources.
