Peabody Youth Hockey

Mite / 8U Hockey

Building skills, confidence, and a love for hockey.

PYH's Mite / 8U program introduces young players to organized youth hockey through age-appropriate development, active practices, teamwork, and fun.

About the Program

The Foundation of Youth Hockey

Mite / 8U is the foundation of the Peabody Youth Hockey travel program. Players continue developing the skating and puck skills introduced through Learn to Skate and Learn to Play while gaining experience as members of a team.

At this age, development comes first. Practices focus on skating, puck touches, repetition, decision-making, and age-appropriate activities that keep children actively engaged.

Our goal is to help every player build a strong foundation, develop confidence, enjoy being part of a team, and establish a lasting appreciation for hockey.

Age Eligibility: Mite / 8U is intended for players within the applicable 8U age classification. Birth-year eligibility is determined by current-season hockey association guidelines. Families with placement questions should contact PYH.

Our Development Philosophy

USA Hockey's American Development Model

USA Hockey's American Development Model (ADM) provides age-appropriate guidance for helping children develop skills, confidence, and a lifelong enjoyment of hockey.

More Activity & Repetition

Station-based practices and smaller group activities give players frequent opportunities to skate, handle the puck, and practice new skills.

Small-Area Games

Cross-ice, half-ice, and small-area activities encourage puck involvement, decision-making, creativity, and active participation.

Age-Appropriate Development

Training emphasizes fundamental skating and hockey skills while recognizing that children develop at different rates and learn through experience and repetition.

Fun & Long-Term Growth

Positive experiences, encouragement, teamwork, and participation help young players build confidence and maintain their enthusiasm for hockey.

Seasonal Information: Practice schedules, team assignments, fees, league placement, and game formats may vary from season to season. Current details are communicated through PYH and TeamSnap.

Exploring the Game

Trying Different Positions

At the Mite / 8U level, young players benefit from experiencing different parts of the game while continuing to develop their skating and hockey fundamentals.

PYH encourages age-appropriate opportunities for players to explore positions, including goaltending, without requiring early specialization.

Trying goaltending can be an exciting experience, and continuing to skate and develop as a player helps build a broad athletic foundation.
