Peabody Youth Hockey · Youth Programs
Building Skills. Confidence. A Love for Hockey.
Mite hockey introduces young players to organized team hockey through age-appropriate practices, games, and skill development. At PYH, we focus on creating a positive experience that helps every player improve and enjoy being part of a team.
About the Program
Mite / 8U is an important introduction to team hockey. Players continue developing the skating and puck skills introduced through Learn to Skate and Learn to Play while gaining experience with teammates and coaches.
The emphasis is on learning, participation, and steady improvement. Children benefit from active practices, frequent puck touches, and opportunities to develop at their own pace.
Player Development
Mite hockey focuses on fundamental skills through engaging practices and age-appropriate activities.
01 / Skating
Building confidence and control through repetition and movement.
02 / Puck Skills
Becoming more comfortable handling the puck during practices and games.
03 / Hockey IQ
Developing awareness, decision-making, and positive team habits.
USA Hockey's American Development Model (ADM) emphasizes age-appropriate instruction, station-based practices, small-area games, frequent puck involvement, and long-term player development. These principles help young players learn through active participation while keeping hockey enjoyable.
USA Hockey Player & Parent Resources ↗The Mite Experience
PYH Mite players participate in team practices and organized competition appropriate for their development level.
Coaches focus on active, skill-based practices with plenty of skating, puck touches, repetition, and small-area activities. Players learn while staying engaged and having fun.
Mite teams participate in age-appropriate competition that reinforces skills, teamwork, and game awareness. Smaller-area game formats play an important role in 8U development.
Team placement may consider player evaluations, skating ability, development needs, roster availability, and appropriate competitive placement.
Tryouts & Evaluations →Mite players may have opportunities to try goaltending while continuing to develop their skating and other hockey skills. Early specialization is not necessary.
Explore Goaltending →Season Information: Practice schedules, game times, team assignments, fees, and league placement can change from season to season. PYH communicates team-specific details through TeamSnap and its coaches.
